As owners of a rental property built in 1910, we did not understand all the lead based paint hazard laws or even what was supposed to be done first. We contacted The Corporation for Healthy Homes & Economic Development (CHHED) for help. We were worried about scheduling and learned that CHHED had flexible appointments. CHHED staff members were very pleasant and knowledgeable: they explained the laws and our responsibility as landlords in a easy to understand professional manner. They also helped us to complete the state property registration forms. Today our rental property has passed clearance and our property has become a lead safe home for our tenants’. We are very thankful that CHHED is available in our community.

CHHED WORKING WITH LOCAL LANDLORD FOR HEALTHIER RENTALS
Project Funded by
Maryland Affordable Housing Trust
At my age and income, I could not afford a 2nd mortgage to fix my house. Every rainy day was a bad day for fear of my roof caving in. There was no where to turn, until I read about The Corporation for Healthy Homes. They worked with me from start to finish. Because of that caring organization, my home is livable again.

CHHED HELPS SENIOR CITIZEN GET THE LEAD OUT AND WARM UP HOME
“My home was cold and drafty with flaking paint everywhere. My daughter called CHHED and spoke with Ms. Johnson. She came to see me and talked with me about the dangers of Lead Based Paint, she really knows her stuff. Ms Johnson provided me with pamphlets and told me how to keep me and my grandchildren safe from lead based paint exposure.”
“CHHED then matched me up with the programs I qualified for, helped me complete the necessary paperwork, and answered all of my questions. Now I have a new heating system, and I’ve scheduled to receive lead abatement on my house. There was no way I could have gotten all of this done on my own. CHHED really helped me, Deborah Johnson is an angel. My home is warm in the winter and cool in the summer thanks to the new heating and air conditioning system.”

CHHED’s Construction Manager “Jay” visits ACE Hardware in Cambridge to educate homeowners and contractors on the dangers of hazardous Lead Based Paint and Mold in housing.
Hazardous mold, lead based paint, and household allergens were among the topics of discussion for more than 50 Wal-Mart patrons who stopped at the Healthy Homes table. Literature was provided, with option follow-up. A drawing for a free air filter donated by Wal-Mart was held. Ms. Cindy Neely of Cambridge won the drawing. 30 out of the fifty people visiting CHHED’s healthy home table discussed their personal experiences with lead based paint and mold exposure. More than one hundred households were reached during lead week.
